TikTok Shop US unit economics
TikTok Shop US Fees and Profit Guide
A referral rate is only one part of TikTok Shop unit economics. A usable price model also needs creator commission, product conversion, first-mile and last-mile logistics, packaging, advertising, samples, and expected return loss.
Treat platform, creator, and return percentages as variable costs that rise with selling price.
Keep product, logistics, packaging, ads, and sample allocations visible as unit costs.
Reconcile every editable assumption with Seller Center before committing inventory or price.
Build the contribution-margin formula
Start with revenue, subtract converted product cost and every order-level expense, then divide net profit by revenue for net margin. Break-even price covers fixed unit costs and variable rates before a target profit is added.
- Platform commission = selling price × category referral rate.
- Creator cost = selling price × creator or affiliate rate.
- Expected return loss = selling price × planning return rate.
- Target price = fixed unit costs ÷ (1 - variable rates - target margin).
Test creator and advertising scenarios separately
A product can be profitable with organic orders and unprofitable with creator or paid-media acquisition. Run a baseline, a creator-led scenario, and a paid-ad scenario instead of blending every channel into one average too early.
A warning is a decision signal, not a calculation failure. Loss-leader launches and sample campaigns can be intentional, but the cost should remain explicit.
Worked example: a $39.99 TikTok Shop order
- $8 product cost in CNY converted at 7.2 CNY per USD
- 6% platform fee, 12% creator commission, and 8% return-loss assumption
- $5.70 logistics, $0.50 packaging, $5 ads, and $1.20 sample allocation
The calculator estimates $16.08 net profit and a 40.2% net margin. Changing creator commission, ads, or returns immediately shows how much margin is channel-dependent.
